AYAM broiler, sering juga disebut ayam ras pedaging atau ayam potong merupakan jenis ayam yang cepat tumbuh besar. Ayam ini adalah hasil persilangan sistem dengan genetik yang berkualitas. Banyak kalangan berpendapat, usaha ternak ayam jenis ini akan menghasilkan keuntungan lebih cepat.
Seperti halnya dengan Slamet yang tinggal di Dusun V, Desa Margodadi, Kecamatan Jati Agung, Kabupaten Lampung Selatan. Sudah hampir 21 tahun ia menekuni usaha ternak ayam broiler. Ayam-ayam tersebut dipelihara di dalam kandang seluas kurang lebih 7 X 30 M yang berada tak jauh dari rumahnya.
Sehari-hari, Slamet dibantu oleh beberapa karyawannya, salah satunya Sulistio. Ayam diberi makan pada sore hari, sedangkan pada pagi hari membersihkan minumnya. Merawat ayam boiler ini cukup mudah.
“Ayam ini diberi makan konsentrat yang terbuat dari campuran jagung dan dedak. Diberikan juga asupan berupa vitamin. Selain itu, kandangnya juga ditaburi sekam padi kering supaya tetap hangat,” jelas Sulistio saat Travel2Lampung berkunjung pada akhir Nopember lalu.
Ternak ayam ini berdiri sejak tahun 2000. Jenis ayam yang dipelihara ialah boiler atau ayam potong saja. Jumlahnya kurang lebih ada 7.000 ekor. Saat ini, ayam sedang berumur 21 hari. Pada usianya 30-35 hari nanti, ayam tersebut sudah bisa dijual.
“Pembelinya dari Bandar Lampung dan sekitarnya, bahkan hingga ke Palembang, Jambi, dan Jakarta. Mereka membeli mulai dari 600 ekor sampai 2.000 ekor. Ayam diangkut menggunakan truk,” tutup Sulistio.(Cho/E1)
